The department has introduced a distinctive and innovative style of teaching. The focus is on teaching core components i.e grammar, composition, comprehension, and English text in the context of their relevance to Indian students today. Moreover, the department conducts guest lecture programs, literary activities to boost their confidence and enhance their vocabulary.

Aims and objectives:

  •  To read and respond to articles and literary texts containing social and cultural narratives.
  •  To speak English fluently in an academic and social forums.
  •  To improve comprehension skills.
  •  To write formal letters, business letters, goodwill letters, etc
  •  To summarize the articles in discipline areas.
    The curriculum is designed with the objective of contextualizing and contemporizing literary text. Seminar-style teaching with continuous assessment through presentations is encouraged. Interactive teaching and mentoring establish rapport between students and teachers. The College follows the University syllabus. The study involves the critical analysis of prescribed texts and comprehension skills. In addition, the department teaches Communication
    Skills, manual writing,, business correspondence and literary texts.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of the course, the students will be able to:

  •  Read, comprehend and respond to questions on articles, essays, and literary texts.
  •  Speak fluently in English viz. to make a presentation and engage in a debate.
  • Draft formal letters, goodwill letters, response letters, job applications, letters to editors and to different organizations bodies, and responses to inquiries, applications, and complaints.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT REPORT 

The Guest Lecture Program of the English Department

The English Department of Arts faculty of Aqsa Women’s Degree College organized a Guest Lecture Program on 23rd September 2017 on the college campus. The guest speaker was Dr. Arun M Ahirrao (Associate Professor and HOD of G.E.I’s Mahila Mahavidyalaya College). The topic of his lecture was “Creative writing in English “.In his lecture, he had given the emphasis on narrative craft, character development, and the use of literary tropes. He also had an interactive session after the lecture, where he cleared different queries of students and faculty as well. The Guest Lecture Programme was conducted under the assistance of Sayyed Zainab and Momin Nargis (Asst. Lecturer of English).
